As my first job out of college, I was a copy editor and page designer for several major metropolitan daily newspapers in the Bay Area, including the (now-defunct) Oakland Tribune and San Francisco Examiner. Newspaper design can be very pre-planned and stringent, but I had the opportunity to design several cover story spreads that let me stretch out and break from the established form a bit.
